The United States government is moving to automatically register young men for military draft eligibility as soon as December 2026, ending decades of self-registration under the Selective Service System (SSS).
According to a BBC report, under the proposed rule, men will be registered automatically within 30 days of their 18th birthday, transferring responsibility from individuals to the federal system through integration with other government databases. The change aims to streamline registration and save millions in administrative costs spent reminding eligible men to register.
The measure, approved by Congress in December 2025 as part of the National Defense Authorization Act, still requires final regulatory approval before implementation.
Currently, most men aged 18β25 are already legally required to register for selective service. Failure to do so is a federal crime that can carry penalties including imprisonment of up to five years and disqualification from federal student aid, employment, and citizenship for non-citizens. Despite existing measures, compliance fell to 81 percent in 2024, highlighting gaps in the current system.
Pennsylvania Democratic Representative Chrissy Houlahan, who sponsored the automatic registration language, stated that the change allows the government to redirect resources toward military readiness and mobilization rather than registration campaigns.
While the move does not constitute a draft, some Americans have raised concerns that it could pave the way for conscription in the event of a future crisis or war, particularly amid rising tensions with Iran.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed such concerns in March, stating:
βIt’s not part of the current plan right now, but the president wisely keeps his options on the table. There’s no greater priority than protecting the American people and our troops.β
Historically, the United States has implemented a wartime draft six times, most recently during the Vietnam War, which ultimately led to the establishment of an all-volunteer military in 1973. Selective service registration was reinstated in 1980 under President Jimmy Carter, and the system has remained in place to ensure readiness in the event of national emergency.
