Nollywood actress and producer Bolaji Ogunmola has apologised to the Yoruba community following public backlash over a scene in her film that previously sparked outrage for derogatory comments about Yoruba people.
The scene, which PM News had earlier reported, went viral after actor IK Ogbonna made offensive remarks during a comedic moment with Ogunmola, prompting threats and criticism that led her to temporarily deactivate her social media accounts.
In her apology, Ogunmola took full responsibility for the distress caused and clarified her intentions. “First of all, I want to apologise to the well-respected Yoruba people for this error. The insult and threat to life and livelihood I have experienced in the last three days has been extremely disturbing,” she said.
She explained that the film, produced three years ago, was meant as a comedy exploring tribal disagreements that ultimately resolve in love and unity. Ogunmola emphasised that she never intended to stereotype any group and remains proud of her Yoruba heritage. “I am Yoruba, omo Ibadan ponbele ni mi. I take full responsibility and sincerely apologise to my people and lovers of my work,” she added.
Despite the apology, some social media users remain sceptical, questioning why she did not intervene during the filming or address the issue sooner.
