U.S. President Donald Trump has instructed Vice President J.D. Vance to seek a diplomatic exit from the escalating conflict with Iran as the administration’s peace delegation prepares to depart for Islamabad, Pakistan.

Vance, widely seen as one of the more cautious voices in Trump’s inner circle regarding military intervention, will lead talks aimed at stabilising a fragile ceasefire and preventing a wider regional escalation. He will be joined by Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner, both of whom participated in prior rounds of indirect negotiations with Iranian officials.

The Islamabad talks come against the backdrop of a two-week ceasefire that appears tenuous, with Iran’s public demands remaining at odds with conditions set by the United States and Israel. Trump’s directive to Vance reflects the administration’s urgent goal: finding a clear path to end U.S. involvement in the conflict without compromising national security objectives.

Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir has stressed that the Israeli Defense Forces remain active, stating that they are not in a ceasefire and could resume operations against Iran at any moment. Meanwhile, reports that Trump threatened NATO over the Strait of Hormuz were denied by UK officials, who confirmed their support is limited to defending allies and ensuring safe maritime passage.
