Bundesliga: History made in world as Union Berlin appoint first ever female head coach

Quick Read

At 34, she becomes the first woman to lead a men’s team in the Bundesliga and the first female head coach in any major European men’s league.

German club Union Berlin have made history by appointing Marie-Louise Eta as their new head coach.

At 34, she becomes the first woman to lead a men’s team in the Bundesliga and the first female head coach in any major European men’s league.

She takes over after Steffen Baumgart was sacked following a run of poor results. Eta will manage the team until the end of the season.

Eta said she is happy with the opportunity and ready to take on the challenge.

The club has struggled in recent months, winning only two matches since Christmas and sitting just above the relegation zone. Sporting director Horst Heldt said the team must improve quickly to stay in the league.

Eta had earlier made history in 2023 as the first female assistant coach in the Bundesliga. As a player, she won the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2010 and three league titles.

She is expected to take charge of Union Berlin’s women’s team in the summer.
