Manchester City on Sunday delivered a masterclass in clinical efficiency at Stamford Bridge, dismantling a lackluster Chelsea side 3-0 to reinforce their title credentials.
Despite a spirited opening from the hosts, Pep Guardiola’s tactical superiority eventually wore down a Chelsea team that looked increasingly fragile under pressure, leaving Liam Rosenior searching for answers as his side fell away in the second half.
The first half was a high-octane affair defined by aggressive pressing from both sides, though clear-cut chances remained at a premium.
Chelsea thought they had snatched an early lead when Marc Cucurella found the net, but the celebrations were cut short by a definitive offside flag.
At the other end, Gianluigi Donnarumma proved why he is considered among the world’s elite, producing a stunning reflex save to deny Pedro Neto from close range.
While the statistics showed a balanced contest at the interval, the momentum shifted irrevocably toward the visitors immediately after the restart.
The breakthrough arrived in the 51st minute through a moment of pure technical quality. Rayan Cherki, a constant thorn in the Chelsea defense, delivered an exquisite lofted cross deep into the box for Nico O’Reilly, who showcased brilliant hang-time to power a header into the roof of the net.
Before the home side could regroup, City doubled their advantage in the 57th minute. Cherki again turned provider, threading a perfectly weighted pass to Marc Guehi, who showed immense composure against his former club to fire a low drive into the bottom left corner.
Chelsea’s structural integrity vanished entirely as the game progressed. In the 68th minute, a calamitous defensive lapse allowed Jeremy Doku to pounce on a loose ball; the Belgian winger made no mistake, coolly slotting it past a stranded Robert Sanchez to make it 3-0.
Rosenior attempted to salvage the match with a triple substitution, introducing Alejandro Garnacho and Liam Delap, but the Sky Blues remained in total control.
Even as the clock ticked into eight minutes of stoppage time, City continued to threaten, with Erling Haaland forcing a superb late save from Sanchez.
