El-Rufai bail hearing stalled again

Quick Read

The court adjourned ruling on El-Rufai’s bail application to April 21, 2026, following submissions from both the prosecution and defence. Counsel to the ICPC argued that investigations were ongoing and that granting bail at this stage could interfere with the process.

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai appeared before the Kaduna State High Court on Tuesday in the ongoing corruption case filed against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), with the proceedings taking place under tight security.

Several armed personnel were deployed around the court, keeping journalists and members of the public at a distance as the high-profile hearing drew attention from citizens and political observers alike. El-Rufai arrived in a white Hilux vehicle provided by ICPC operatives.

The court adjourned ruling on El-Rufai’s bail application to April 21, 2026, following submissions from both the prosecution and defence. Counsel to the ICPC argued that investigations were ongoing and that granting bail at this stage could interfere with the process.

The defence team, led by Ukpong Abang, urged the court to grant bail, stressing that El-Rufai had cooperated fully with investigators and posed no flight risk.

“Our client has complied with all investigative requests and is prepared to abide by any bail conditions the court may impose,” Abang said.

El-Rufai faces a nine-count amended charge alleging fraud, abuse of office, and corruption during his tenure as governor. The charges were separated from those of his co-defendant, Amadu Sule, who was excused from proceedings due to medical reasons.

The amended counts include alleged violations of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, the Advance Fee Fraud Act, Kaduna State Penal Code, and the Public Procurement Law.

It is worth noting that while the State High Court adjourned El-Rufai’s bail, the Federal High Court had previously granted him bail, reflecting the ongoing complexity of parallel proceedings across state and federal jurisdictions.

The case continues to attract national attention, highlighting both the intensity of Nigeria’s anti-corruption enforcement and the public scrutiny surrounding high-profile political figures. Observers note that the heavy security at the Kaduna court underscores the sensitivity of the matter and the heightened public interest in the outcome of the bail application and ongoing trial.
