In a night of relentless tension at the Metropolitano, Ademola Lookman proved to be the difference-maker as Atletico Madrid secured their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

Despite a 2-1 defeat on the night to a resurgent Barcelona, Diego Simeone’s men advanced 3-2 on aggregate, setting up a mouth-watering final-four clash.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Barcelona arrived in Madrid with nothing to lose and sparked a frantic opening. The Blaugrana silenced the home crowd just four minutes in when the teenage sensation Lamine Yamal pounced on a defensive lapse to slot home, making it 0-1.

The pressure intensified in the 24th minute when Dani Olmo turned provider, finding Ferran Torres in the box. Torres composed himself and lashed a strike inside the right post to level the aggregate score at 2-2. At that moment, momentum was firmly with Hansi Flick’s side.

With Atletico wobbling, it was Lookman who steadied the ship in the 31st minute. Collecting a sharp pass from Marcos Llorente, Lookman showcased his trademark agility, jinking past his marker before unleashing an unstoppable drive into the bottom left corner.

The goal-Lookman’s most vital since joining the Rojiblancos, restored Atletico’s aggregate lead and forced Barcelona to chase two more goals to progress.

The second half was a masterclass as Atletico sat deep and absorbed wave after wave of Barca attacks. The visitors thought they had leveled the aggregate score again in the 55th minute through Ferran Torres, but a VAR review ruled the goal out for a marginal offside, sparking furious protests from the Barcelona bench.

The uphill battle became a mountain for Barcelona in the 79th minute. After a lengthy VAR consultation for a reckless challenge, referee Clement Turpin brandished a straight red card to Eric Garcia, leaving the visitors to finish the match with ten men.

Despite late efforts from Robert Lewandowski and a flurry of tactical changes from Flick, including the introduction of Roony Bardghji and Marcus Rashford, Atletico’s veteran core held firm.
