Grief hung heavy in the air on Wednesday as Nigeria bid a final farewell to Late Brigadier General Omo Braimah, Captain Ismail and other soldiers who died in active service, their lives cut short in the line of duty.
At the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, Borno State, the solemn ceremony drew grieving families, fellow soldiers and top government officials, all united in sorrow and reverence for men who gave everything for their country.
Draped in the national colours, the coffins of the fallen heroes lay side by side, a silent testament to sacrifice. As military bugles sounded and gun salutes echoed across the cemetery, emotions broke through the rigid discipline of the parade ground.
Mothers wept. Wives clutched photographs. Children, too young to fully grasp the loss, stood quietly as their fathers were lowered into the earth.
The fallen officers were accorded full military honours, a final tribute to their courage and unwavering commitment to the defence of Nigeria.
Among those present were Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum; the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd); the Chief of Defence Staff; the Chief of Army Staff; and other senior military officers, all gathered to honour the dead and comfort the living.
In their tributes, they described the deceased as brave patriots who stood firm in the face of danger, paying the ultimate price so others might live in peace.
Their words, though solemn, could not fully capture the depth of loss felt by the families left behind.
As citations of their service were read aloud, detailing years of dedication and sacrifice, many struggled to hold back tears. For their loved ones, the ceremony was not just about honour, it was a painful reminder of futures cut short and dreams left unfulfilled.
Prayers were offered for the repose of their souls, as comrades saluted one last time, standing at attention in quiet tribute.
For the nation, their deaths are a reminder of the unseen battles fought daily by members of the Armed Forces. For their families, it is a wound that time may never fully heal.
