Two arrested over arson attempt on UK synagogue

Quick Read

The attempted attack caused no damage and no injuries were reported. It was discovered later in the morning when a member of staff alerted police at around 08:30hrs.

Police have arrested two suspects following an attempted arson attack on a synagogue in Finchley, an incident authorities are treating as an antisemitic hate crime.

The arrests were carried out on Wednesday evening in the Watford area after detectives reviewed CCTV footage linked to the case. A 47-year-old woman was detained at about 16:47hrs, while a 46-year-old man was arrested later at 19:15hrs. Both are being held on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and remain in custody.

The incident under investigation occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at a synagogue on Fallow Court Avenue. Detectives say two individuals, dressed in dark clothing and wearing balaclavas, entered the premises at approximately 00:09hrs.

According to police, the suspects placed two glass bottles near the building’s windows and hurled a brick, smashing one of the containers, which is believed to have contained petrol. However, the bottles did not ignite and the suspects fled shortly afterwards.

The attempted attack caused no damage and no injuries were reported. It was discovered later in the morning when a member of staff alerted police at around 08:30hrs.

The investigation is being handled by the Met’s North West Area Command Unit, with support from Counter Terrorism Policing London.

Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams said:
“I hope the swift action by officers today to identify and arrest two people provides some reassurance and demonstrates how seriously we take attacks of this nature.

“However, we understand the significant concern the Jewish community will feel at another incident so soon after the arson attack on four ambulances in Golders Green. There is no suggestion the matter in Finchley and the incident in Golders Green, for which three people have been charged, are linked.

“Our increased patrols in the Finchley area continue, and I would ask that anyone with concerns speaks to my officers.”

Police have appealed for further information, urging anyone with relevant CCTV or dash-cam footage to come forward, quoting CAD 1686/15APR.
