NCDC speaks on fresh COVID-19 cases in Nigeria
Quick Read
“All identified contacts are being followed up appropriately, and there is no evidence at this time of widespread transmission,” stated NCDC Director-General, Jide Idris, in a press release.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has sought to calm public fears following the confirmation of a fresh COVID-19 case in Cross River State. The health agency has assured the public that there are currently no signs of widespread transmission in the state.
“All identified contacts are being followed up appropriately, and there is no evidence at this time of widespread transmission,” stated NCDC Director-General, Jide Idris, in a press release.
The confirmation of the new case on Tuesday came years after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the end of the global emergency phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had caused global shutdowns, economic turmoil, and millions of deaths.
The case, according to Cross River State’s Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, involves a Chinese national who works in Akamkpa Local Government Area. The individual, who arrived in Nigeria on March 17, developed symptoms shortly after arrival.
The NCDC further assured the public that the patient has been isolated and is currently being managed in accordance with standard health protocols. “The patient is in stable condition and responding to care,” Idris added.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing that strict response measures are in place.
