The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced the 2027 general elections process with the opening of a 38-day window for political parties to conduct their primaries.

Parties now have from April 23 to May 30, 2026, to hold primaries for the presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Houses of Assembly positions.

This period will also accommodate the resolution of any disputes arising from the primaries.

As stipulated by INEC guidelines, political parties are required to submit their membership registers to the commission at least 21 days before holding their primaries. The deadline for the submission of all membership registers is May 10, 2026.

This significant step marks the formal commencement of the electoral process for the 2027 general elections, with political parties now gearing up for their internal contests. Nigeria’s 18 registered political parties are expected to follow strict timelines to ensure compliance and avoid legal complications.

INEC has also urged all stakeholders to ensure that the primaries are conducted transparently and inclusively, with a strong emphasis on internal democracy. Further details on the monitoring process and guidelines for other aspects of the electoral process will be provided by the commission in the coming weeks.
