The Lagos State Government has announced the emergency closure of the outbound section of Eko Bridge for safety investigations and repair works.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the closure would take effect from Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

Osiyemi said the affected section covers the stretch between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa outbound toward Lagos Island.

He stated that the temporary closure became necessary to enable the government carry out critical safety assessments and repair works on the bridge.

According to him, motorists heading toward Lagos Island are advised to make use of the Third Mainland Bridge to access their destinations during the period of the repairs.

Osiyemi added that the inward Lagos Island carriageway would remain open to traffic.

“The inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to motorists,” he said.

The commissioner assured residents that adequate traffic management measures had been put in place to minimise disruptions and ease vehicular movement along alternative routes.

Osiyemi said traffic officials and security personnel would be strategically deployed to guide motorists and maintain order throughout the duration of the closure.

“Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” he stated.

He appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic authorities and exercise patience during the repair period, noting that the intervention was necessary to guarantee the safety of road users and preserve the integrity of the bridge infrastructure.
