“It is clear to me that the Prime Minister will not be able to regain his authority,” Rutland wrote in his resignation letter

Pressure mounted on Labour leader Keir Starmer today as two of his ministerial aides resigned, calling for his resignation as Prime Minister.

“It is clear to me that the Prime Minister will not be able to regain his authority,” Rutland wrote in his resignation letter. He also pointed to voters’ growing frustration, saying, “I heard little dislike for local councillors, nor for the Labour Party, but the animosity towards the Prime Minister was clear.”

Rutland, who had spent time speaking with constituents, noted that the discontent was palpable, especially following last week’s local elections where Labour suffered heavy losses. He added that Starmer’s leadership had become a barrier to delivering the change the country voted for, warning that the party must act swiftly to avoid further damage.

The Labour Party has been rocked by growing calls for Starmer’s resignation, with over 50 MPs now publicly urging the Prime Minister to step down or set a clear timetable for his exit. The number of MPs calling for Starmer’s resignation has continued to rise in recent hours, with some citing Starmer’s failure to connect with the electorate and his inability to reverse the party’s decline in public opinion.

“I do not have faith that the Prime Minister can meet this challenge,” Rutland said, referring to Starmer’s inability to counter the rise of Reform UK. The comments highlight concerns within the party that Starmer may not be the right figure to face the threat posed by new political forces.

Despite the growing rebellion, Starmer remains defiant. In an earlier statement, he insisted that he would prove “doubters wrong,” acknowledging that the government had made mistakes but insisting that it had “got the big political choices right.” However, his position continues to weaken as more MPs voice their dissatisfaction.

Sally Jameson, ministerial aide to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, also backed calls for Starmer to set a clear timetable for his resignation, further signaling the discontent within the party ranks.
