Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has officially been sworn in for a seventh term in office after winning the country’s January 2026 presidential election.
The inauguration ceremony took place on May 12, 2026, at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city.
According to official election results, Museveni won the election with 71.65 percent of the votes. His main opponent, Bobi Wine, secured 24.72 percent.
At 81 years old, Museveni remains one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. He has been Uganda’s president since 1986.
Museveni was born in 1944 in the Mbarara area of Uganda. He began his education at Kyamate Boys School in 1953 before attending Mbarara High School in 1959. He later studied at Ntare School after his family relocated in the 1960s.
He eventually attended the University of Dar es Salaam, where he studied political science and helped establish the University Students’ African Revolutionary Front.
