At least six people were killed and seven others wounded after an Israeli airstrike hit a residential house in southern Lebanon, deepening fears that the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is collapsing.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that the strike occurred late Monday night in the town of Kfardounine, located in the Tyre district of southern Lebanon. The injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals in the coastal city of Tyre for treatment.

The latest attack comes amid escalating cross-border hostilities between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah, despite an internationally-backed ceasefire agreement aimed at ending months of fighting and paving the way for peace negotiations.

Israeli authorities have not immediately commented on the strike, but the Israeli military has repeatedly said its operations in southern Lebanon target Hezbollah infrastructure, rocket launchers and fighters allegedly operating near civilian areas. Hezbollah, on the other hand, accuses Israel of deliberately targeting Lebanese civilians and violating the ceasefire agreement.

The latest violence is rooted in the broader regional conflict that intensified after the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza in October 2023.

Shortly after the Gaza war began, Hezbollah opened a second front along Israel’s northern border, launching rockets and drones into Israeli territory in what it described as support for Palestinians in Gaza. Israel responded with heavy airstrikes and artillery bombardments across southern Lebanon.

Over the following months, the conflict steadily escalated into one of the deadliest confrontations between Israel and Hezbollah since the 2006 Lebanon war. Entire villages along the border were evacuated, while tens of thousands of civilians on both sides fled their homes.

In March this year, Israel intensified its military campaign after accusing Hezbollah of expanding missile attacks deeper into northern Israeli cities. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said Israeli attacks since March 2 have killed at least 2,869 people and wounded more than 8,700 others.

Diplomatic efforts led by the United States, France and the United Nations later produced a ceasefire arrangement between the Lebanese and Israeli governments. However, the truce has remained fragile, with both sides frequently accusing each other of violations.

Recent days have witnessed a sharp rise in exchanges of fire, with Hezbollah launching drones and rockets towards Israeli military positions, while Israel carried out multiple airstrikes across southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.
