FG moves to prevent Ebola entry as outbreak hits Congo, Uganda

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), says it is closely watching the Ebola situation following outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and a confirmed imported case in Uganda.

NCDC Director-General, Dr. Jide Idris, said in a public advisory that Nigeria has increased its preparedness and is working with Port Health Services and other health partners to prevent any spread into the country.

He explained that response teams are already active in affected regions, while Nigeria remains on high alert to protect its public health system.

The NCDC has strengthened disease surveillance across the country, improved laboratory testing capacity, and increased infection prevention measures in health facilities. It is also working more closely with state health authorities and communities to raise awareness.

The agency said it is carefully tracking global developments and will respond quickly if the situation changes.

Ebola Virus Disease is a serious and often deadly illness that spreads through direct contact with infected blood, body fluids, or contaminated objects. Symptoms may appear between 2 and 21 days after infection.

The NCDC urged Nigerians to maintain good hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing with soap and water, and to avoid contact with anyone showing symptoms of Ebola. It also advised healthcare workers to strictly follow safety procedures when handling patients.

The agency reassured the public that there is no confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria at the moment, but said ongoing monitoring and preventive measures are necessary to ensure the country remains safe.
