Following the attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State last Friday, the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere has expressed concern and urged South-West governors to take stronger action on security.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the group said its leader, Reuben Fasoranti, was deeply saddened by the incident, which happened during the same week he celebrated his 100th birthday.

Fasoranti sympathised with the victims and their families and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured during the attacks.

Afenifere also pointed to recent kidnappings and attacks across the South-West and parts of Kwara State, warning that criminal groups may be trying to spread insecurity across the region.

The group said the actions taken so far by South-West governors do not show enough urgency in dealing with the security situation. It questioned the progress of earlier security measures announced by governors, including CCTV projects, surveillance aircraft, and other security plans.

According to Afenifere, state governments must do more to protect lives and property, stressing that security and welfare are the primary responsibilities of government.

The organisation called on governors in the South-West to make the protection of residents their top priority and ensure that kidnappers and bandits no longer operate in the region.

Afenifere, however, praised the quick response of the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, who visited the scene after the kidnapping and launched the Police Violent Crime Response Unit. The group said it hopes the initiative will help reduce crimes such as banditry and abduction.

The organisation added that while the Federal Government is responsible for national security, governors also have a duty to use available resources to keep their states safe.
