Spanish authorities have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of killing his parents and injuring four other people, including two babies, during a shooting incident in southern Spain.

The attack occurred late Monday night in the town of El Ejido near Almería, prompting a major police response and a manhunt before the suspect later surrendered himself to authorities.

According to Spain’s Guardia Civil, the shooting was reported around 11:00 p.m. local time.

Police said two people died in the attack, believed to be the suspect’s parents, while four others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Local media reports indicated that one of the injured victims is believed to be the suspect’s seven-month-old son, while another injured child is an 18-month-old baby.

A 60-year-old man was also reportedly among those wounded during the incident.

Spanish authorities have not officially released the identities of either the suspect or the victims.

Investigators said the gunman fled briefly after the shooting before turning himself in at a nearby police station.

The Guardia Civil confirmed that the suspect had been taken into custody on suspicion of murder while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Authorities said detectives were working to establish the motive behind the deadly shooting.

The incident has shocked residents of El Ejido, a quiet agricultural community in Andalusia, where mass shootings are considered extremely rare.

According to Project Insight, which tracks gun violence across Europe, only four mass shootings were recorded in Spain between 2000 and 2023.
