Fresh political tension is emerging within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State following the screening exercise for party positions, with signs that some aggrieved members may reconsider their future in the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

The concerns stem from the exclusion of several aspirants from contesting in the party’s internal process, a move that has sparked reactions from affected stakeholders and triggered consultations among their supporters across parts of the state.

One of the affected aspirants and senator representing Rivers West Senatorial District, Ipalibo Banigo, addressed supporters in Obuama, Degema Local Government Area, where she called on the APC national leadership to review the outcome of the screening process.

Banigo, who previously served as deputy governor under the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, urged supporters not to react emotionally, expressing optimism that the issues raised could still be resolved by the party.

Also speaking, disqualified Rivers State House of Assembly aspirant, Dr. Legborsi Yamaabana, criticised the decision and suggested that the move could have political consequences for the party.

According to him, consultations are ongoing with supporters and grassroots stakeholders, adding that affected aspirants remain determined to participate in the electoral process even if it means exploring alternative political platforms.

Yamaabana argued that aspirants who believe they enjoy strong grassroots backing should not be excluded without clear explanations, insisting that such decisions could affect the party’s performance in future elections.

Meanwhile, the Rivers APC publicity secretary appealed for calm and called on both successful and unsuccessful aspirants to remain committed to the party’s broader objectives.

The spokesperson urged members to prioritise unity, stressing that victory at the primary level does not automatically translate into success at the general election and assuring members that internal mechanisms exist to resolve disputes and strengthen cohesion ahead of 2027.
