India postpones Africa Summit over Ebola fears

Quick Read

In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the decision was reached after consultations with the African Union and participating countries. The ministry noted that protecting delegates, officials and support staff remained a top priority.

The Indian government has postponed the Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit following the worsening Ebola outbreak in parts of Central Africa, raising fresh concerns over international travel and public health safety.

The summit, which was scheduled to take place in New Delhi from May 28 to May 31, was expected to bring together leaders and senior officials from across the African continent to discuss trade, investment, technology, healthcare and diplomatic cooperation.

Indian authorities said the postponement became necessary due to the growing health emergency linked to the Ebola outbreak, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where scores of deaths and suspected infections have been reported in recent weeks.

In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the decision was reached after consultations with the African Union and participating countries. The ministry noted that protecting delegates, officials and support staff remained a top priority.

The outbreak has triggered international concern, with global health agencies intensifying surveillance efforts to prevent cross-border transmission of the virus. The World Health Organization has reportedly classified the situation as a serious public health threat requiring coordinated international action.

India has also strengthened health screening procedures at its airports, especially for passengers arriving from affected African nations. Additional monitoring and advisory measures have reportedly been introduced at major entry points across the country.

The India-Africa Forum Summit is regarded as one of the key diplomatic engagements between India and African nations. The platform has historically focused on strengthening economic ties, expanding development partnerships and deepening political cooperation.

Although no new date has been announced, officials indicated that the summit would be rescheduled once the health situation improves and participating countries are able to travel safely.

Several African countries are already working with international health bodies to contain the outbreak through contact tracing, isolation measures and emergency vaccination campaigns.
