Remo Stars have been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after a dramatic final day of the season ended in disappointment for the former champions.

The Ikenne-based side played out a 1-1 draw against Bendel Insurance, but the result was not enough to secure their place in Nigeria’s top flight for another season.

Remo Stars entered the final round of fixtures knowing they needed a positive result and favourable outcomes elsewhere to avoid dropping into the Nigeria National League (NNL).

Although they appeared on course to survive for most of the game, results from other centres eventually worked against them.

At another venue, Kun Khalifat fought back to defeat Wikki Tourists 3-1. That victory proved decisive and pushed Remo Stars into the final relegation spot.

During the match, Remo Stars looked set to claim a vital victory after Victor Mbaoma opened the scoring in the first half. His goal gave supporters hope that the club would complete a late escape from relegation.

However, deep into stoppage time, Meyiwa Oritseweyimi scored the equaliser for Bendel Insurance, leaving Remo Stars unable to collect the maximum points needed to improve their position.

At the end of the campaign, Remo Stars finished with 47 points  the same total as Kwara United. But goal difference became the deciding factor. Remo Stars ended with a minus-five difference, one goal worse than Kwara United’s minus-four, which allowed Kwara United to remain in the NPFL.

The relegation marks another difficult chapter for a club that only recently celebrated one of the biggest moments in its history. Remo Stars had lifted their first-ever NPFL title last season and entered this campaign with hopes of building on that success.

Instead, the season turned into a challenging one, with issues off the pitch adding to their struggles. Fan disturbances and renovation work at their home ground meant the club had to play many of its home fixtures away from Ikenne at MKO Abiola Stadium.

Their inability to consistently turn home games into victories ultimately affected their survival push.

This relegation is the third in Remo Stars’ history and means the club will now compete in the NNL next season as they attempt to rebuild and earn promotion back to the NPFL. Supporters will hope the setback is temporary and that the club can quickly return to the top division.
