Mohammed Sani Abacha, son of Nigeria’s former military ruler, General Sani Abacha, has lost the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship ticket for Kano State.

The primary election held to choose the party’s candidate ended in favour of Muhammad Bello Dalhatu, who secured a clear majority of the votes cast.

Party officials said Dalhatu polled 2,233 votes to defeat Abacha, who managed 749 votes in the contest.

The outcome means Abacha will not fly the PDP flag in the 2027 Kano governorship race, as delegates overwhelmingly backed his rival during the exercise.

The primaries were conducted under the supervision of party officials and monitored by stakeholders in the state.

The result adds to the list of high-profile contenders who have failed to secure party tickets ahead of the general elections.
