A woman identified as Maimuna Shitu, her 18- month- old son, Harisu Muntari and one other yet-to-be identified man lost their lives in two separate drowning incidents in Kano on Friday.

The multiple well tragedies were confirmed in a statement by Kano State Fire Service on Friday.

The first incident involving the yet-to-be identified man occurred in Semegu community in Kumbotso Local Government Area, the spokesperson of the fire service, Saminu Abdullahi, said in a statement.

Abdullahi said the Fire Service received an emergency call from one Hafizu Garba-Saminu at about 07:06 a.m. that a man had drowned in a well and a rescue team was immediately sent to the scene.

The rescue team brought out the man dead from the well and his remains were handed over to Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), Salisu Salihu, of Panshekara Police Division for further investigation.

The Fire Service spokesperson said the second incident involving the 32- year- old Shitu along with her Harisu who suffered from mental illness fell inside well in Madarin Taba village, Warawa Local Government.”

Abdullahi said the service received an emergency call from a man, Buhari Sa’idu, at about 09:40 a.m that a woman and her son had drowned in a well.

“We immediately sent our rescue team to the scene, and both victims were brought out of the well.”

He said the deceased bodies were handed over to the Ward Head, Yusuf Surajo, and the victim’s husband, Muhammad Shitu.

Abdullahi said the cause of incidents are currently under investigation.

He appealed to residents, particularly parents and guardians, to ensure that wells are properly covered in order to prevent such incidents.
