The Kogi State Police Command has concluded a specialised firearms training programme involving 565 constables, as part of efforts to strengthen operational effectiveness and improve policing standards across the state.

The exercise, which lasted for two months, focused on weapon handling, marksmanship and firearm safety. According to the command, the programme was designed to sharpen the skills of officers and prepare them to respond more effectively to modern security threats.

Speaking at the passing-out parade held at the police headquarters in Lokoja, Commissioner of Police Naziru Bello Kankarofi praised the participants for their commitment and discipline throughout the training.

He said the programme combined practical and theoretical sessions aimed at improving officers’ competence in the safe use and maintenance of firearms while reinforcing professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights.

Kankarofi stressed the importance of continuous training for younger officers, noting that regular capacity-building initiatives remain essential to building a more responsive and efficient police force.

The police commissioner urged the graduating constables to apply the knowledge gained responsibly, reminding them that firearms should only be used for the protection of lives and property.

He also acknowledged the support of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for prioritising personnel development, and commended the instructors whose contributions ensured the successful completion of the programme.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to regular training and retraining of personnel as part of ongoing efforts to enhance professionalism and service delivery within the Nigeria Police Force
