Real Madrid are on the verge of completing the signing of Dutch international Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan after reaching an agreement with the player and deciding to activate his release clause, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Romano reported on Tuesday night that the Spanish giants had sealed an agreement with the 30-year-old right-back and were preparing to trigger the clause in his Inter contract, paving the way for one of the summer’s most surprising transfers.
The deal, reportedly worth around €20 million to €25 million, is expected to be finalised in the coming days once the necessary paperwork and formal procedures are completed.
If completed, the move would hand Real Madrid a vastly experienced defender who has established himself as one of Europe’s most consistent attacking full-backs during his time in Serie A.
Dumfries joined Inter Milan from PSV Eindhoven in 2021 and quickly became a key figure in the club’s domestic and European campaigns. Renowned for his pace, physicality and attacking contributions, the Netherlands international has played a crucial role in Inter’s recent successes, including deep runs in the UEFA Champions League and strong performances in the Italian top flight.
The transfer represents a significant market opportunity for Real Madrid, who have been monitoring the defender’s situation for several months.
Reports indicate that Dumfries’ contract contains a release clause worth slightly less than €25 million, allowing interested clubs to bypass lengthy negotiations with Inter by paying the stipulated amount.
Madrid’s interest intensified after the club began exploring options to strengthen the right side of defence ahead of the new season.
The Dutchman had also attracted attention from several top European clubs, but Real Madrid moved decisively after learning of the favourable release clause.
For Inter Milan, the impending departure would represent a major setback. Dumfries has been one of the club’s most influential players in recent years, and his exit would leave a significant void in the squad.
The move also underlines Real Madrid’s determination to refresh their defensive options as they prepare for another campaign challenging for domestic and European honours.
Dumfries brings a wealth of experience, having earned over 70 caps for the Netherlands and featured prominently at major international tournaments. His ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch is expected to add another dimension to Madrid’s squad.
While neither club has officially announced the transfer, multiple reports in Spain and Italy indicate that the deal is effectively complete, with only formalities remaining before Dumfries is unveiled as a Real Madrid player.
Should the transfer be completed as expected, Dumfries would become one of Real Madrid’s headline acquisitions of the summer and another statement of intent from the Spanish giants as they continue to strengthen their squad for the challenges ahead.
