Residents of Oyo State have been advised to brace for possible flash flooding this month following a weather forecast indicating an increased likelihood of intense rainfall across the state.

The warning was issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, who said the alert followed the High Impact Based Forecast released by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

According to him, severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall could trigger sudden flooding in several communities and cause water to overflow onto roads.

“High-intensity thunderstorms and heavy surface runoff could result in temporary road overflows and community flooding.

“While the State Government has intensified the clearing of critical drainage channels across the state, residents must also play their part by ensuring that drains, gutters and waterways around their homes and communities are free of plastic bottles, silt and other waste materials that obstruct the free flow of water.

“Let me also advise motorists and pedestrians to avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, especially at night, as flash floods can be deceptive and powerful enough to sweep away vehicles and individuals.”

Aderinto said the government had stepped up drainage maintenance efforts but stressed that public cooperation remained essential to reducing the impact of flooding and safeguarding lives and property.

He also cautioned developers and individuals against activities that interfere with natural watercourses, including unauthorised dredging and construction projects that obstruct drainage routes. Such actions, he said, violate environmental regulations and would attract sanctions.

The commissioner urged residents of flood-prone and low-lying areas to take preventive measures ahead of expected heavy rainfall. He advised households to move valuable possessions, important documents and electrical equipment to safer positions above ground level.

“Parents and guardians are also advised to keep children and other vulnerable persons indoors during periods of heavy rainfall to reduce exposure to danger,” Aderinto added.

He further disclosed that emergency response arrangements had already been put in place to deal with any flood-related incidents, while encouraging residents to remain alert, observe safety precautions and stay informed throughout the rainy season
