Ooni pays tribute to Kola Oyewo, describes him as pride of Yorubaland

The Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council (SNTRC), Arole Oodua Olofin Adimula and the Natural Head of the Oduduwa race worldwide, the Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, has paid glowing tribute to veteran Nollywood actor, theatre scholar and cultural icon, Pa Kola Oyewo, describing him as a pride of Yorubaland whose remarkable contributions to the growth of theatre, culture and education will remain indelible in history.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, Otunba Moses Olafare, the Ooni who is also the Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) condoled with the family, friends, associates, and admirers of the late thespian, who passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 80.

The revered monarch noted that Pa Oyewo’s death marked the end of a distinguished era in Nigerian theatre and cultural scholarship, adding that the late actor devoted his life to promoting Yoruba language, culture and values through his exceptional performances on stage and screen.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Pa Oyewo became one of Nigeria’s most respected theatre practitioners, earning widespread recognition for his contributions to the performing arts and academia. Although a native of Oba-Ile, he spent much of his life in Ile-Ife, where he became a beloved figure and contributed immensely to the cultural and intellectual development of the ancient city.

The Ooni described the deceased as a custodian of Yoruba heritage whose works helped preserve indigenous traditions and inspired generations of actors, scholars and culture enthusiasts across Nigeria and beyond.

“Pa Kola Oyewo was a pride of Yorubaland, a distinguished scholar and a cultural ambassador who dedicated his life to the promotion of our rich heritage. Through his talent, wisdom and commitment to excellence, he brought honour not only to Ile-Ife and Osun State but to the entire Yoruba race and Nigeria as a whole,” the Ooni said.

The Ooni further stated that the late actor’s enduring legacy would continue to inspire future generations, noting that his impact transcended entertainment and extended to education, mentorship and cultural preservation.

While praying for the peaceful repose of the departed icon, the Ooni extended his heartfelt condolences to the Oyewo family and urged them to take solace in the exemplary life and achievements of their patriarch.
