Tunisia sack coach after one World Cup match

Quick Read

“We already knew that Lamouchi wasn’t a great tactician and that Tunisia had the level of a U23 national team. The real problem is much deeper than that,” the fan wrote.

Tunisia have reportedly sacked head coach Sabri Lamouchi after just one match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Lamouchi’s future came under serious doubt after Tunisia were hammered 5-1 by Sweden in their Group F opener in Monterrey.

The defeat sparked anger among Tunisian supporters, with many criticising both the performance and the timing of the reported decision to dismiss the coach.

Journalist Romain Molina reported that Lamouchi’s time in charge of the Tunisian national team had come to an end.

“It’s the end for Sabri Lamouchi at the helm of the Tunisian national team,” he said.

One fan described the decision to sack him during the tournament as “the worst possible idea,” arguing that Tunisia’s problems were deeper than the coach.

“We already knew that Lamouchi wasn’t a great tactician and that Tunisia had the level of a U23 national team. The real problem is much deeper than that,” the fan wrote.

Another fan mocked the timing of the reported sack, writing: “Lol, already?”

Reports said the Tunisian Football Federation held an emergency meeting after the heavy defeat before deciding to part ways with the 54-year-old.

Tunisia’s poor World Cup start followed another embarrassing result before the tournament, as they were beaten 5-0 by Belgium in their final warm-up match.

Lamouchi only took charge of the national team earlier this year after Sami Trabelsi left following Tunisia’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

His spell reportedly ends after just five matches in charge.

The former Nottingham Forest manager began with a win over Haiti but failed to beat Canada, Austria, Belgium and Sweden.

Against Sweden, Tunisia fell behind inside the opening 10 minutes through Yasin Ayari before Alexander Isak also scored on his World Cup debut.

Sweden went on to dominate the match, leaving Tunisia with back-to-back five-goal defeats.

Tunisia have already been linked with possible replacements, including former forward Wahbi Khazri and ex-national team coach Mondher Kebaier.

Kebaier previously led Tunisia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The North African side now face a race against time to appoint a replacement before their next group match against Japan on Saturday, June 20.
