France vs Senegal: A battle of memory, pride and World Cup pressure
Quick Read
Senegal have shown solid form in recent games, with wins over Peru and Gambia, a loss to the United States, and a draw with Saudi Arabia. They have also won two of their last three World Cup opening matches.
France and Senegal will meet tonight at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in their opening Group I match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Kick-off is 8pm Nigerian time.
The match brings back memories of Senegal’s famous 1–0 win over France in the 2002 World Cup opening game in Seoul.
That defeat contributed to France crashing out of the tournament without scoring a goal. It remains one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history.
France coach Didier Deschamps, who will leave his role after the tournament, said the past result is history and not about revenge. He noted that most of his current players were not even born in 2002.
Midfielder N’Golo Kanté said the team must stay focused and united, adding that their main challenge is to improve themselves and perform well throughout the competition.
France come into the match in strong form, unbeaten in qualifying. They recorded five wins and one draw, and also had wins in friendly matches against Brazil, Colombia, and Northern Ireland. However, they lost to Côte d’Ivoire in a recent experimental lineup match. Star forward Kylian Mbappé will be under pressure after failing to score in recent warm-up games.
Senegal, coached by Pape Thiaw, also come in with confidence. They recently won the Africa Cup of Nations, although the title was later taken away in controversial circumstances. The team says the setback has made them stronger.
Senegal have shown solid form in recent games, with wins over Peru and Gambia, a loss to the United States, and a draw with Saudi Arabia. They have also won two of their last three World Cup opening matches.
Thiaw admitted France are one of the strongest teams in the world but said Senegal are ready to compete.
France will be hoping to avoid another shock against Senegal, while Senegal will aim to repeat their famous 2002 victory.
