Defection: APC sends strong message to Ex-IGP Adamu, supporters

"Brooms can be burnt, but the achievements and impacts of our party in the state and the ideology behind the broom cannot be burnt," Bello said.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State has appealed to supporters of former Inspector-General of Police, Abubakar Adamu, to remain calm and accept the outcome of the party’s governorship primary following his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The state APC Chairman, Aliyu Bello, said Adamu’s exit from the ruling party would not affect its chances in the 2027 general elections.
Adamu recently dumped the APC after losing the party’s governorship primary election to Senator Ahmed Wadada, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
Speaking during a rally at Angwan Gayam in Gayam Electoral Ward of Lafia, the state capital, Bello urged supporters of the former police chief who are still in the APC not to be swayed by the development.
He stressed that political power comes from God and advised party members to accept the outcome of the primary election in good faith.
The APC chairman also condemned the actions of some support groups loyal to Adamu, who have reportedly been burning brooms, the symbol of the APC, as a sign of protest against the party.
“Brooms can be burnt, but the achievements and impacts of our party in the state and the ideology behind the broom cannot be burnt,” Bello said.
According to him, the APC’s popularity in Nasarawa State is built on what he described as the achievements of Governor Abdullahi Sule, including infrastructural development, youth empowerment, employment creation and peaceful coexistence.
He added that the party has also benefited from the presence of federal government projects under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“It is also built on the massive federal government presence delivered by President Bola Tinubu and that is what the people vote for, not just a symbol,” he said.
Bello warned against divisive politics and sentiments being promoted by politicians dissatisfied with the outcome of the primary election.
He challenged those criticising the APC to present their records of service and contributions to the development of the state.
Also speaking at the rally, the Deputy Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area, Uba Arikya, said politics should focus on good governance and improving the lives of the people rather than insults and political incitement.
A party chieftain, Sidi Ndagi, urged residents to support all APC candidates in the 2027 elections and commended Governor Sule for his developmental projects across the state.
The rally attracted thousands of APC supporters from Gayam Electoral Ward, who displayed party banners, posters and brooms in a show of support for the ruling party.
