The United States of America (USA) booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 2-0 victory over Australia in their Group D clash on Friday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side delivered a disciplined and efficient performance, securing a second consecutive victory in the tournament and strengthening their status as one of the standout teams of the group stage.

The Americans took the lead in the 11th minute when Australia suffered a major setback after defender Cameron Burgess inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to deal with a dangerous attacking move.

The unfortunate own goal handed the United States an early advantage and put the Socceroos under immediate pressure.

Buoyed by the breakthrough, the USA dominated possession and dictated the tempo for long spells of the first half, repeatedly probing Australia’s defence through Sergino Dest, Weston McKennie and Folarin Balogun.

Australia struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, although Mathew Leckie came closest for Tony Popovic’s men in the opening period when he curled a shot narrowly wide of the post.

The Americans thought they had doubled their lead in the 43rd minute through Alex Freeman, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside after a VAR review. However, Freeman would not be denied for long.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, the USA extended their advantage when Freeman reacted quickest to a rebound inside the penalty area, powering a header into the net to make it 2-0 and leave Australia facing a daunting second-half challenge.

Australia attempted to mount a response after the interval, with substitutes Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda injecting fresh energy into the side. Metcalfe forced a comfortable save from goalkeeper Matt Freese, while Irankunda’s lively movement caused occasional problems for the American backline.

Despite Australia’s efforts, the USA remained largely in control, defending resolutely and limiting their opponents to few genuine scoring opportunities.

Pochettino freshened his side with a series of substitutions as the match entered its closing stages, introducing Joe Scally, Auston Trusty, Sebastian Berhalter, Giovanni Reyna and Haji Wright to help see out the result.

Australia’s frustration grew as yellow cards were shown to several players, including Harry Souttar and Jacob Italiano, while the Americans comfortably managed the closing minutes.
