The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has recorded its first polling unit victory in the ongoing Ekiti State governorship election, as results from across the state gradually begin to emerge.
The party won at Ajagbala Hall Polling Unit, located in Okeruku Ward 02 of Ikere Local Government Area. The result is among the first officially announced from the election, which has attracted significant attention from political stakeholders and residents of the state.
According to the result sheet sighted by journalists the ADC polled 39 votes to defeat its closest rival, the All Progressives Congress (APC), which secured 29 votes at the polling unit.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) finished third with 17 votes, while other political parties recorded lower numbers.
The victory gives the ADC an early boost in the keenly contested governorship race, although election officials and observers have cautioned that the outcome of a single polling unit cannot determine the overall result of the election.
Earlier in the day, the ADC governorship candidate, Dare Bejide, raised concerns over the conduct of the election. He alleged that some of his supporters were subjected to intimidation and attacks in parts of the state.
The allegations added to concerns about isolated incidents reported in some communities during the voting exercise.
Despite the complaints, voting and the collation of results continued in most polling units across Ekiti State under the supervision of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Security personnel were also deployed to several locations to maintain law and order and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
As of the time of filing this report, more results were being awaited from polling units across the 16 local government areas of the state.
Political parties, supporters and election observers continue to monitor the exercise closely as the race to determine Ekiti’s next governor unfolds.
