Lionel Messi once again demonstrated why he remains one of football’s greatest icons, scoring twice to inspire Argentina to a commanding 2-0 victory over Austria in their FIFA World Cup Group J clash on Sunday.
The Argentine captain delivered another masterclass in leadership and finishing, ensuring the reigning South American giants maintained their strong start to the tournament and moved into the knockout stage.
Messi opened the scoring in the 38th minute after latching onto a clever pass from Facundo Medina before calmly firing into the bottom corner beyond Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.
The goal came after the veteran forward had earlier missed a penalty, underlining his determination to bounce back and make the difference when it mattered most.
Austria battled hard and created several opportunities, with Marcel Sabitzer and Michael Gregoritsch both threatening the Argentine defence. However, goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez and Argentina’s backline remained resolute, frustrating the Europeans throughout the contest.
