Belgium’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup suffered another setback after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Iran in a tense Group G clash in Los Angeles.
Iran, chasing a place in the knockout rounds for the first time in their history, earned a valuable point through discipline, resilience and the brilliance of goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, who produced several important saves to frustrate the Red Devils.
Beiranvand was the standout performer for Iran, denying Belgium repeatedly as the Europeans dominated possession but struggled to make their pressure count. His best moment came early in the second half when he pulled off a superb save to keep out Maxim De Cuyper’s effort.
Belgium also threatened in the first half, with Youri Tielemans denied from close range, while De Cuyper was again frustrated after the break as Iran defended with organisation and determination.
Iran thought they had taken the lead midway through the first half when Mehdi Taremi finished off a clever free-kick routine, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR review.
Belgium’s task became more difficult in the 66th minute when defender Nathan Ngoy was shown a straight red card for a professional foul on Taremi. The dismissal left Belgium with 10 men and further reduced their attacking rhythm.
Despite being a man down, Belgium still pushed for a winner, but Iran held firm and continued to pose danger on the counter. Thibaut Courtois also had to make an important save to stop Taremi from breaking the deadlock.
The result leaves Belgium still searching for their first win of the tournament after two matches, raising fresh concerns over their qualification hopes.
For Iran, the draw represents another major step towards history. It was also the first time they have avoided defeat in their opening two matches at a World Cup, keeping alive their dream of reaching the knockout stage.
