“State Police has been top of mind for President Tinubu since 1999 when he governed Lagos. We are happy to witness its emergence in Nigeria today,” he said.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has welcomed the Senate’s approval of the constitutional amendment bill that seeks to establish state police across the country, describing the development as a major step towards strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the governor congratulated President Bola Tinubu and praised lawmakers for endorsing all 26 clauses of the proposed legislation.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the Senate’s decision marks a turning point in the nation’s democratic journey and could transform security management by bringing policing closer to local communities.

He said the approval of the bill reflects a growing commitment to reforms that would improve public safety and make law enforcement more responsive to the needs of citizens.

Describing the Senate’s action as “epochal”, the governor said the milestone highlights President Tinubu’s enduring advocacy for a more federal system of governance.

“Today is a great day for our country and a moment to celebrate the triumph of genuine democratic and developmental ideas over parochial sentiments,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor recalled that Tinubu had consistently pushed for state police since his tenure as Lagos governor between 1999 and 2007, despite opposition from some quarters.

“State Police has been top of mind for President Tinubu since 1999 when he governed Lagos. We are happy to witness its emergence in Nigeria today,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence that the proposed policing structure would enhance efforts to confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats that continue to challenge national stability and economic progress.

He also commended the President for his persistence in pursuing reforms aimed at strengthening federalism and improving governance nationwide.

The governor further lauded the Senate for taking what he termed a historic decision and called on state legislatures across the federation to move swiftly in considering and approving the constitutional amendment.

“The Senate has made history with this bold step. I urge the State Assemblies to follow suit and ensure this important constitutional amendment becomes a reality,” he said.
