France and Norway will face off in a blockbuster 2026 FIFA World Cup Group I clash on Friday, with Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland expected to take centre stage.
The match will be played in Foxborough, outside Boston, at 3:00 p.m. local time, with both teams already showing strong form in the tournament.
Mbappe and Haaland have both started the World Cup in ruthless fashion, scoring four goals each.
They are currently just behind Lionel Messi, who leads the Golden Boot race with five goals.
The France versus Norway clash is not only about two teams fighting for first place in Group I. It is also about two of world football’s biggest attackers meeting on the grandest stage.
France go into the match with a slight advantage.
Les Bleus need only a draw to finish top of the group, thanks to their superior goal difference.
They have been impressive so far, beating Senegal and Iraq with authority.
Norway, however, have also made a strong statement.
They defeated Iraq 4-1 in their opening match before beating Senegal 3-2 on Monday.
Haaland, who is playing in his first World Cup, has looked comfortable on the global stage.
The Manchester City striker has scored freely and led Norway’s attack with confidence.
He has also enjoyed life away from the pitch, saying he was pleased to move around New York City without being easily recognised.
After Norway sealed qualification for the last 32 with the win over Senegal, Haaland played down talk of his team winning the tournament.
“To win the World Cup, absolutely not,” he told Fox television.
“We’ve won 12 competitive games in a row now. I’m part of something special, making history, and I’m extremely proud to be Norwegian.”
He also said he was not worried about facing France.
“They’re probably going to win against us, they’re probably going to win the whole tournament,” Haaland said.
France’s preparation for the match has been affected by the absence of manager Didier Deschamps, who left the team camp following the death of his mother.
Assistant coach Guy Stephan will lead the team until Deschamps returns.
“I am thinking a lot about Didier and his family,” Stephan said.
“I am just trying to make a difficult situation as normal as possible.”
France will be keen to avoid defeat because finishing second in the group could give them a more difficult route in the knockout stage.
A loss could set up a last-32 meeting with Ivory Coast, followed by a possible clash with Brazil in the last 16.
England could also stand in their path in the quarter-finals, with Argentina a possible semi-final opponent.
In Group H, Spain will look to secure top spot when they face Uruguay in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Spain need only a draw to finish first in the group.
Uruguay, however, must get at least a point to keep their hopes of reaching the last 32 alive after being held to a 2-2 draw by Cape Verde in their second match.
Cape Verde will also continue their surprise campaign when they face Saudi Arabia.
In Group G, Egypt will attempt to finish top when they play Iran in Seattle.
The match has attracted attention off the pitch because it was selected as a Pride Match by local officials before the teams involved were known.
Iranian and Egyptian officials have reportedly raised objections to the Pride events surrounding the fixture.
In the other Group G match, Belgium will try to reach the knockout stage when they face New Zealand.
Belgium’s squad, led by experienced stars Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, will be under pressure to deliver after a mixed start to the tournament.
But the biggest spotlight on Friday will be on Mbappe and Haaland.
One is chasing another World Cup statement with France.
The other is trying to push Norway deeper into history.
And with top spot in Group I on the line, the world will be watching.
