"All rescued persons, recovered vehicles and properties were safely moved to Buratai town. The rescued civilians are currently undergoing documentation and medical evaluations," the statement added.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have freed 53 civilians and recovered eight vehicles after dismantling a suspected terrorist roadblock mounted by ISWAP/JAS fighters along the Buratai-Kamuya road in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Nigerian Army disclosed the operation in a statement posted on its X account on Friday. The statement, signed by the Acting Military Information Officer at the Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, Capt. Mohammed Goni, said the operation was carried out on Wednesday, 24 June.

According to the Army, soldiers stationed at Dutse Kura detected suspicious movements after surveillance cameras captured insurgents obstructing the highway.

“The encounter took place when troops deployed at Dutse Kura sighted terrorists blocking the highway through surveillance cameras.

“A Quick Reaction Force (QRF) team immediately mobilized to the scene and pursued the insurgents toward the Mangari-Dora general area, made contact and engaged the terrorists in a firefight, forcing them to withdraw in confusion.

“During the operation, troops successfully rescued 53 innocent civilians and also recovered 8 vehicles seized by the terrorists,” the statement read.

Following the exchange of fire, troops reportedly swept through the route used by the fleeing insurgents and carried out further clearance operations to ensure the area was secure.

“It added that the troops cleared the terrorists’ withdrawal route, dominated the area and conducted further searches, although no additional contact was made.

“All rescued persons, recovered vehicles and properties were safely moved to Buratai town. The rescued civilians are currently undergoing documentation and medical evaluations,” the statement added.oop

The military praised the personnel involved, describing their actions as swift and professional. It also appealed to communities across the operational area to remain alert and continue passing credible intelligence on suspicious activities to security agencies.

Borno has remained at the centre of Nigeria’s prolonged insurgency since Boko Haram launched its violent campaign in 2009. The state has continued to witness attacks targeting civilians, security personnel and public infrastructure despite sustained military offensives.

The latest operation is one of several recent successes recorded by Operation HADIN KAI. Earlier this month, troops reported killing 27 suspected terrorists during separate operations in the Southern and Northern Tumbus areas of the state.
