ABUAD multi-system hospital reveals feats in kidney transplants, partners Indian hospital

The Afe Babalola University Multi-System Hospital (AMSH), Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti said it has carried out no fewer than 50 successful kidney transplants and surgeries.

The health institution also announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Manipal Hospitals, India, to strengthen specialist healthcare delivery.

Dr Akin Akinmade, AMSH Chief Medical Director (CMD), disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Friday in Ado-Ekiti, describing the feat as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

“It represents 50 patients who have been given renewed life, 50 families that have been spared the prolonged burden of end-stage kidney disease.

“50 clear demonstrations that highly specialised care can be safely and successfully delivered here in Nigeria,” he said.

Akinmade explained that the hospital’s success was the product of years of deliberate investment in infrastructure, specialist manpower development and international collaborations.

“This is not accidental. It is the result of a hospital culture that places the safety of the patient at the centre of everything we do,” he said.

The CMD said AMSH was entering a new phase of development with the signing of the MoU with Manipal Hospitals, regarded as one of India’s leading healthcare providers.

According to him, the partnership is intended to expand the hospitals capacity, deepen specialist training, improve clinical exchange and open new frontiers in advanced surgical care.

“We have already expanded into advanced urological procedures, including complex urethral reconstruction, penile implant surgery, radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer and reconstructive urology.

“Men who suffer silently from prostate obstruction, urethral strictures, erectile dysfunction or prostate cancer should not have to leave Nigeria before they receive expert care.

“Our vision is to make AMSH a true centre of excellence for nephrology and urological surgery.

“We are also preparing to introduce robotic surgery, which represents the next generation of precision surgery

“In urology, they can improve surgical accuracy, reduce blood loss, shorten hospital stay, support faster recovery and improve outcomes in carefully selected procedures,” the CMD said.

Speaking on behalf of Manipal Hospitals, Dr Rajit Sood, described Ekiti as “an island of knowledge” and expressed confidence that the partnership would enhance knowledge transfer, specialised training and access to advanced medical care.

Also, the Vice-Chancellor of ABUAD, Prof. Smaranda Olarinde, said the institution would continue to invest in strategic partnerships capable of reducing medical tourism, strengthening research and positioning Ado-Ekiti as a destination for world-class healthcare.
