Morocco produced another memorable FIFA World Cup performance after eliminating the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a dramatic 1-1 draw after extra time to book their place in the Round of 16.
The North Africans displayed remarkable resilience to overturn a late deficit, frustrating Ronald Koeman’s side before holding their nerve in the penalty shootout.
The Netherlands looked to be heading for victory when Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, finishing coolly after receiving a precise pass inside the penalty area to give the Dutch a 1-0 lead.
Morocco refused to surrender and found a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time. Issa Diop rose highest to meet a pinpoint delivery from Chemsdine Talbi, powering a close-range header into the top corner in the 91st minute to send the contest into extra time.
Both teams created opportunities during the additional 30 minutes, with Soufiane Rahimi and Achraf Hakimi threatening for Morocco, while the Dutch searched desperately for a winner. However, outstanding goalkeeping from Bono and Bart Verbruggen ensured the deadlock remained unbroken.
The tie was ultimately decided from the penalty spot, where Morocco showed greater composure.
After Neil El Aynaoui struck the crossbar with Morocco’s opening kick, the Netherlands failed to capitalise as Justin Kluivert hit the post. Soufiane Rahimi and Chemsdine Talbi converted for Morocco, while Wout Weghorst and Teun Koopmeiners scored for the Dutch.
