Paraguay produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup after eliminating tournament heavyweights Germany 4-3 on penalties following a gripping 1-1 draw after extra time, securing a place in the Round of 16.
Germany entered the knockout clash as favourites but were left heartbroken after a dramatic contest in which Paraguay combined resilience, discipline and outstanding goalkeeping to knock out one of football’s traditional powerhouses.
The South Americans struck first late in the opening half when Julio Enciso rose highest to head home Matias Galarza’s inviting cross, silencing the German supporters and giving Paraguay a deserved lead before the interval.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side responded strongly after the break and found their equaliser in the 54th minute. Kai Havertz finished from close range after an intelligent delivery by Florian Wirtz, restoring parity and setting up a tense battle for a place in the next round.
Germany dominated possession for long periods and created several clear opportunities, but Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill delivered a remarkable performance, producing crucial saves to deny Havertz, Joshua Kimmich and other German attackers.
The drama intensified in extra time when Jonathan Tah appeared to have headed Germany into the lead. However, after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out for a foul, keeping Paraguay alive.
With neither side able to find a winner, the contest went to penalties, where Paraguay held their nerve.
