Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has defended her recent comments about supporting women involved in small businesses such as akara and roasted corn sales.
Speaking during the inauguration of the Abubakar Maje Haruna Hall at the Emir of Hadejia’s Palace in Jigawa State, she explained that the federal government’s support programme is not limited to akara sellers alone.
According to her, traders who sell tomatoes, peppers, vegetables, roasted plantain (bole), and other market goods are also benefiting from the initiative.
Her clarification comes after many Nigerians criticised her earlier remarks, in which she mentioned akara, roasted corn, and kuli-kuli businesses as possible sources of income for women during the current economic challenges.
Remi Tinubu said the federal government has provided ₦100 million to the Jigawa State Government to assist 2,000 small-scale traders.
She explained that each beneficiary will receive ₦50,000 to help expand and sustain their businesses.
The First Lady stressed that the programme is aimed at improving the livelihoods of low-income traders and helping them grow their businesses.
She added that the government would not be discouraged by criticism and would continue implementing initiatives designed to support ordinary Nigerians.
“I know the people who are benefiting appreciate the support. We will not be distracted by negative reports. We will continue working to ensure Nigerians are well cared for,” she said.
Tinubu also encouraged young Nigerians to take advantage of opportunities in agriculture, noting that the country has enormous potential beyond the oil sector.
She cited an orange orchard she recently visited in Benue State as an example of the opportunities available in farming and agribusiness.
