The NSC said the presidential farewell highlights the Federal Government's support for Team Nigeria as it prepares to compete for medals in Glasgow.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will officially bid farewell to Team Nigeria on Thursday before the country’s athletes depart for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The send-off ceremony will be held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. During the event, President Tinubu is expected to encourage the athletes and officials to represent Nigeria proudly and maintain the country’s strong sporting reputation.

According to the National Sports Commission (NSC), Team Nigeria has been training in Abuja and will leave for Aberdeen, Scotland, on Friday. The athletes will spend three weeks in a training camp before moving to Glasgow for the Games.

Nigeria hopes to improve on its performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the country finished as the highest-ranked African nation with 35 medals — 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze.

A total of 74 Nigerian athletes will compete in 10 sports at the Games.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from July 23 to August 2, bringing together athletes from countries across the Commonwealth.
