Morocco produced a ruthless second-half display to overwhelm Canada 3-0 on Saturday, securing a convincing victory that booked the Atlas Lions a place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup.

After a fiercely contested but goalless opening half, Morocco took complete control after the restart, with midfielder Azzedine Ounahi emerging as the architect of Canada’s downfall.

The breakthrough came five minutes into the second half when Ounahi unleashed a superb strike from the edge of the penalty area after being picked out by captain Achraf Hakimi, giving Morocco a deserved lead.

Canada responded with urgency, creating several promising openings through Jonathan David, Tajon Buchanan and Stephen Eustaquio, but goalkeeper Bono and Morocco’s disciplined backline stood firm to frustrate every attacking effort.

As the North Americans committed more players forward in search of an equaliser, Morocco punished them on the counterattack. In the 82nd minute, Brahim Diaz threaded a precise pass into the path of Ounahi, who calmly fired into the top corner to complete his brace and effectively end Canada’s hopes of a comeback.

Morocco were not finished. Deep into stoppage time, substitute Soufiane Rahimi capped a brilliant team move by coolly slotting home the third goal, sealing an emphatic victory that underlined the African side’s growing credentials as genuine title contenders.

The Atlas Lions combined tactical discipline with clinical finishing, limiting Canada to few clear-cut chances despite sustained periods of pressure from Jesse Marsch’s side.

For Canada, the defeat marked the end of a spirited World Cup campaign. Despite showing attacking intent and resilience throughout the tournament, they were ultimately undone by Morocco’s superior organisation, experience and ruthless efficiency in front of goal.

The victory sends Morocco into the quarter-finals brimming with confidence as they continue their quest for a historic World Cup triumph.
