Spain booked their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Championship after Mikel Merino struck deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic 1-0 victory over Portugal in their Round of 16 clash on Monday.
The fiercely contested encounter appeared destined for extra time before Merino broke Portuguese hearts in the 91st minute.
The midfielder, who had come on as a substitute six minutes earlier, latched onto a precise pass from Ferran Torres inside the penalty area before calmly firing a low shot into the bottom-left corner beyond goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
The decisive goal capped an evenly balanced contest in which both sides created chances but struggled to find the breakthrough.
Portugal came close on several occasions through Cristiano Ronaldo, João Félix, Bruno Fernandes and Nuno Mendes, but were repeatedly denied by Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón, who produced a string of crucial saves to keep his side in the game.
Spain also threatened throughout the encounter, with Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, Pedro Porro, Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal all testing the Portuguese defence, while Portugal’s backline and Diogo Costa stood firm until the closing moments.
Portugal suffered an injury setback midway through the second half when Nuno Mendes was forced off and replaced by Nelson Semedo.
With the game heading towards extra time, Spain coach introduced fresh legs, bringing on Merino and Fabián Ruiz in the 85th minute. The tactical switch proved decisive as Merino delivered the winner moments later.
Portugal coach Roberto Martínez also shuffled his pack, introducing Rafael Leão, Diogo Dalot, Francisco Conceição and Bernardo Silva, but the changes failed to prevent Spain from snatching victory.
Referee Anthony Taylor added six minutes of stoppage time, and it was during that period that Merino produced the moment of magic that separated the two European heavyweights.
The victory sends Spain into the quarter-finals, while Portugal bow out after a spirited display that ultimately ended in heartbreak.
