Despite this, Infantino maintained that personal views should never override the authority of independent institutions. He noted that respecting the decisions of FIFA's judicial bodies is essential to preserving fairness, transparency and trust in the sport.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended the governing body’s disciplinary process following widespread debate over the decision to overturn the suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun ahead of the World Cup knockout stages.
In a statement released on Monday, Infantino stressed that FIFA’s judicial and disciplinary bodies operate independently and are responsible for making decisions based solely on the FIFA Disciplinary Code and the facts presented in each case.
The FIFA chief said the autonomy of these bodies is a key pillar of football governance and must be respected at all times, regardless of public opinion or external pressure.
Infantino also addressed reports that he had spoken with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Balogun’s case. He confirmed receiving a phone call from Trump but insisted that, during the conversation, he made it clear that an official legal process was already underway and that the matter would be decided by FIFA’s independent judicial authorities.
According to Infantino, he regularly receives calls from heads of state, government officials, football administrators and business leaders on a wide range of issues related to the sport. However, he emphasized that such conversations do not influence the outcome of disciplinary proceedings.
The FIFA president further stated that he reads the decisions issued by the Disciplinary Committee and, like many football fans, is not always in agreement with every ruling. He admitted that some decisions surprise him, while others are decisions he personally supports.
Despite this, Infantino maintained that personal views should never override the authority of independent institutions. He noted that respecting the decisions of FIFA’s judicial bodies is essential to preserving fairness, transparency and trust in the sport.
The controversy surrounding Balogun’s eligibility has generated strong reactions from several quarters, but Infantino reiterated that FIFA remains committed to due process and the rule of law.
He added that the integrity of the World Cup and the credibility of FIFA competitions depend on allowing independent bodies to perform their duties without interference.
“Whether we personally like a decision or not is irrelevant,” Infantino said, insisting that respect for established procedures is what ultimately protects the integrity and reputation of world football.
