Brazil forward Vinicius Jr has broken his silence following the country’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign, apologising to fans and promising to continue fighting to restore the nation’s place at the summit of world football.
In a heartfelt statement released days after Brazil’s elimination in the Round of 16, the Real Madrid star admitted he needed time to process the disappointment before addressing supporters.
The 25-year-old described representing Brazil as the greatest honour of his career, saying the pain of leaving the tournament so early was difficult to put into words.
“Almost four years later and once again thinking about what to write after a frustration in the World Cup,” Vinicius said.
“I saw so many people of all ages supporting me, embracing our dream, that it would be unfair to remain silent. But I needed a few days to reflect.”
The winger acknowledged the emotional weight of the defeat, revealing how much effort he invested in preparing for the tournament and how determined he was to deliver success for the Brazilian people and his loved ones.
“Wearing the national team jersey is the greatest pride of my life, and leaving a World Cup in the round of sixteen is a feeling that’s hard to explain,” he said, adding that “I know how much I prepared, how much I focused, how much I wanted this for you, for my family.”
Vinicius also admitted that Brazil fell short of expectations despite boasting a squad capable of challenging for the title.
“The feeling of frustration is absurd. We had a group strong enough to do more, and we couldn’t,” he said.
The forward offered a direct apology to supporters, whose hopes of seeing Brazil win a record-extending sixth World Cup title were dashed by the unexpected early exit.
“I apologize and I’m going to fight for our dream of returning to the top of the world,” he pledged.
