At least two people have been killed and four others injured after gunfire broke out at a crowded street festival in Toronto, Canada.

Police received reports of an active shooter on St Clair Avenue at about 8:12 p.m. local time, where thousands had gathered for the annual Salsa on St Clair festival.

Officers found six people suffering from gunshot wounds. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining victims were taken for treatment.

Toronto Deputy Police Chief Francisco Barredo said investigators believed two individuals exchanged gunfire during the festival.

Two firearms were recovered from the scene, but no arrests had been made as of the latest police update.

Barredo described the scene as “very chaotic”, saying an estimated 13,000 people were at the festival when the shooting occurred.

Police were investigating three separate crime scenes linked to the incident and urged members of the public to avoid the area.

Witnesses and anyone with video footage or information about the shooting were asked to contact investigators.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was horrified by the attack and offered prayers to the victims and their families.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also condemned the shooting as “senseless violence” and demanded that those responsible be arrested and brought to justice.

St Clair Avenue remained under heavy police presence following the attack.

The Salsa on St Clair festival, held between July 11 and 12, features live Latin music and dance performances.

This year marked the 22nd edition of the annual celebration.
