Nigeria wins nine gold, five silver medals at 2026 Uganda Para badminton games

Nigeria’s Para Badminton team delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 Uganda Para Badminton International Championship, winning a total of 14 medals—nine gold and five silver—at the tournament held from July 7 to 12 in Uganda.
The outstanding medal haul further reinforced Nigeria’s growing status as one of Africa’s leading para badminton nations, with athletes excelling across both wheelchair and standing categories.
Lyka Brown emerged as one of Nigeria’s top performers, winning gold in the WH1 Women’s Singles before teaming up with Chukwuemeka Ijeoma Gift to claim another gold medal in the WH1/WH2 Women’s Doubles. Chukwuemeka also secured gold in the WH2 Women’s Singles.
In the men’s wheelchair events, Emmanuel Ifeanacho Ohaeri captured gold in the WH2 Men’s Singles and partnered Lyka Brown to win the WH1/WH2 Mixed Doubles title. He also teamed up with Ekeoma Samuel to earn silver in the WH1/WH2 Men’s Doubles, while Ekeoma added another silver in the WH1 Men’s Singles. Ekeoma and Chukwuemeka Ijeoma Gift also claimed silver in the WH1/WH2 Mixed Doubles.
Nigeria also dominated the standing categories, with Obinna Precious Nwosu winning gold in the SL3 Men’s Singles and Eze Sunday Chukwuebuka taking silver in the same event. Nnanna Jeremiah Chigozie claimed gold in the SL4 Men’s Singles before combining with Eze Sunday Chukwuebuka to win the SL3/SU5 Men’s Doubles title. Eneojo Elijah Agada added another gold in the SU5 Men’s Singles and later partnered Obinna Precious Nwosu to win silver in the SL3–SU5 Men’s Doubles.
Reacting to the team’s performance, Badminton Federation of Nigeria President Francis Orbih praised the athletes for their resilience and commitment, describing the medal haul as another milestone for para badminton in the country.
“The para badminton athletes have once again shown that the country can depend on them to win medals and make Nigeria proud,” Orbih said.
He added that the federation would continue to support the athletes as it targets qualification for the Paralympic Games and aims to build on the achievements of Nigeria’s para badminton programme.
Orbih also commended the Abia State Government, Bayelsa State Government and the Police College Badminton Club, Lagos, for sponsoring athletes to the championship, expressing the federation’s willingness to partner with more organisations to further develop the sport in Nigeria.
