Sand, Sweat and Qualification: Nigeria's Beach Volleyball Teams Fire Up in Kaduna Ahead of Nations Cup

Quick Read

As Nigeria's beach volleyball teams prepare for battle on the sand, head coach Kayode Ajilore says his players have stepped up to the challenge in Kaduna.

Time’s ticking, the beach beckons, and Nigeria’s beach volleyball players are zeroing in on their best form.

Training intensely in Kaduna, Nigeria’s male and female national beach volleyball teams are preparing diligently for the upcoming 2026 African Zone 3 Beach Volleyball Nations Cup Qualifiers. From conditioning drills to practicing serves, spikes, blocks and goal-scoring tactics, players are working tirelessly towards their shared goal of qualifying for the continental championships and showing Africa why Nigeria is a force to be reckoned with on the West African beach volleyball scene. With their eyes set on qualification, Nigeria’s beach volleyball athletes have been diligently preparing in camp.

Fueled by Focus and Fitness in Kaduna

Meticulous preparation has been the name of the game for both teams. Sixteen athletes began a training camp in Kaduna last month, staying at a residential facility while Nigeria’s beach volleyball coaches guided them through intensive training. The athletes underwent weeks of training focused on improving strength and endurance, fine-tuning their technical skills, and learning tactics to help them stand out on game day. Of the 16 athletes in camp, only four men and four women will be named to the final squad for the Zone 3 beach volleyball qualifiers.

Expectations are high for Nigeria’s beach volleyball athletes who have been pushing themselves in Kaduna. Through the course of their time in Kaduna, athletes got used to waking up early for fitness workouts, spent hours learning and practicing on the court, and tested their stamina with beach scrimmages. The culmination of their hard work will come in Lagos next month when they step onto the sand with everything to play for, with the nation, social media, and Nigerian betting sites on BettingTop10.ng eagerly watching every spike and volley to comment on.

A Sense of Confidence is Building in Kaduna

As Nigeria’s beach volleyball teams prepare for battle on the sand, head coach Kayode Ajilore says his players have stepped up to the challenge in Kaduna.

“The athletes have been responding well to the intense training we’ve started here in Kaduna,” Ajilore says. “They know what’s at stake and they’re ready to match up against the best teams in the region.”

Technical coaches on both the men’s and women’s side have echoed Ajilore’s remarks, highlighting athletes’ fitness levels and positive progress as reasons to believe in Nigeria’s beach volleyball teams. Women’s assistant coach Felicia Amos praised her players for remaining professional in camp, while men’s coach John Iwerima commended the group for developing strong chemistry in Kaduna. Spending a majority of their time together in Kaduna not only allowed athletes to get comfortable training with their newfound teammates, but it also eliminated some of the logistical challenges that can come with making arrangements to meet up for training.

Prepared to Play in Front of the Home Crowd

The qualifiers will be hosted at Badagry Beach in Lagos. Teams will compete for four coveted spots that allow them to participate in the African Beach Volleyball Championships. Qualifying for the African Championships won’t be easy—teams like the Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, the Niger Republic and Burkina Faso will also be looking to book their spot at the continental tournament.

Although Nigeria has the home-court advantage, the NVF knows that results on the sand, not the spectators in attendance, will decide which teams qualify. With better facilities and more support than ever before, Nigeria’s beach volleyball teams feel prepared to make an impact on the international stage.

Player Welfare Strengthens Preparation

Behind every strong team is support staff and programs that empower athletes to be their best.

During their time in Kaduna, Nigeria’s beach volleyball players were housed in comfortable accommodations near the training facilities. Plus, players had access to Nigeria Volleyball Federation-supported welfare assistance to ensure that they could focus on what matters most: volleyball. Players, coaches, and staff have noticed the difference that Nigeria’s improved beach volleyball program has made on them during their time in Kaduna and are motivated to show exactly what they’re capable of come June.

Player Peter Ibrahim said he and his fellow competitors in camp are eager to step onto the sand for game day.

“It’s going to be fun representing Nigeria and trying to bring the trophy home,” Ibrahim said. “We’ve been working hard, and I feel like we are ready.”

Ready to Make Nigeria Proud

Just like that, competitive beach volleyball season is right around the corner. For Nigeria’s beach volleyball athletes, there’s little left to do but relax and recover before the excitement begins. Team Nigeria’s coaches and athletes have gone above and beyond to prepare for this opportunity, and they know it. Now, it’s time to take the battle to the sand.
