Serie A: Amorim throws Chukwueze Into new role ahead of new season

Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze was given a new role during AC Milan’s first training session under newly appointed manager Ruben Amorim as preparations for the new season got underway.

The Nigerian international was deployed on the right side of a four man midfield, operating as a wing back rather than in his usual attacking winger position.

The tactical change is believed to be part of Amorim’s plans to introduce his preferred system at the Italian club.

The role is similar to the one Amorim successfully used for Ivory Coast international Amad Diallo during his time at Manchester United. In that system, the wing back is expected to contribute both defensively and offensively by helping the defence, supporting attacks and creating chances from wide areas.

Chukwueze spent last season on loan at Premier League side Fulham, where he made 25 appearances, scoring three goals and providing four assists. Although his time in England was mixed, the move helped him gain valuable experience in a highly competitive league.

With Amorim now taking charge at AC Milan, the former Villarreal star has been handed a fresh opportunity to revive his career at the San Siro. The Portuguese coach is expected to assess all members of the squad before making decisions on his plans for the new campaign.

For Chukwueze, adapting to the demands of the wing back position could be key to earning regular playing time. His pace, dribbling ability and work rate could make him a useful option in Amorim’s system if he successfully adjusts to the tactical requirements of the role.

The coming weeks of pre season training will be crucial as the Nigerian looks to impress the new manager and secure an important place in AC Milan’s squad for the 2026/27 season.
